Ryan Barbaro is a pediatric critical care physician, health services researcher and implementation scientist at the University of Michigan.  His research has focused on the life support technology known as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), which provides pulmonary or cardiac life support when mechanical ventilation and medical management fails. He and co-investigators are also leading an international NIH-funded study called ASCEND (ARDS in Children and ECMO initiation strategies’ impact on Neuro-Development). ASCEND aims to characterize the one-year outcomes of ECMO-supported children and aims to address the question of if and when ECMO should be initiated in children with severe lung injury called pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Ryan Barbaro is also the Registry Chair for the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO), an international consortium of more than 500 ECMO centers, and is a Training to Advance Care Through Implementation Science in Cardiac And Lung Illnesses (TACTICAL) Scholar.
