Adam Gottula is an emergency medicine/anesthesia critical care fellow at The University of Michigan with an academic interest in out of hospital cardiac arrest, mechanical support, and critical care transport medicine. Prior to his fellowship he completed his emergency medicine training at The University of Cincinnati where he also served as the Resident Assistant Medical Director for UC Health Air Care, the critical care medicine transport service.

Early in his residency he was involved in research that encompassed many topics within critical care including packed red blood cell administration, acute ischemic stroke treatment, and the novel uses of dexmedetomidine. As his interest in out of hospital cardiac arrest evolved, he became involved in projects which accessed the eligibility for ECPR based upon location of cardiac arrest and EMS barriers within existing ECPR protocols. Additionally, within his role as the resident assistant medical director for UC Health Air Care he developed the workflow, training and operational needs to transport patients supported on extracorporeal devices by helicopter. This led to additional projects evaluating many forms of mechanical support in the emergency medicine and critical care environments, including Impella, intra-aortic balloon pump, and ECMO.

Going forward he is motivated to continue research within out of hospital cardiac arrest and mechanical circulatory support. His long-term research goals involve developing a comprehensive understanding of the systems surrounding mechanical support utilization within out of hospital cardiac arrest and emergency medicine.
