Dr. Schnell is the John A. Jacquez Collegiate Professor of Physiology, and the chair of the Department of Molecular & Integrative Physiology at the University of Michigan Medical School. He is Professor of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics.  He received a License (degree equivalent to M.Sc.) in Biology from Universidad Simón Bolívar (Venezuela) in 1996 and D.Phil. in Mathematical Biology from the University of Oxford (UK) in 2002. Following his doctoral studies, he was a Junior Research Fellow in Christ Church and Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow in the Center for Mathematical Biology at the University of Oxford from 2002-2004. Prior to joining the University of Michigan, Dr. Schnell was an Assistant Professor of Informatics and Associate Director of the Biocomplexity Institute at Indiana University.

His research lies at the interface between the biomedical sciences, engineering, chemistry and applied mathematics. It involves combining engineering and metrology principles with mathematical, statistical, and computational methods to develop rigorous approaches to measure the rates of biochemical reactions and distinguish their molecular mechanisms under a wide array of experimental and physiological conditions.  His goal is to develop standard-based methods in biochemistry, biology, and medicine to obtain high-quality measurements with rigor, reproducibility, and robustness.  Dr. Schnell’s research has substantially altered the view of measuring and modeling enzyme-catalyzed reactions within cells, where the environment is heterogeneous and characterized by high macromolecular content.

An internationally renowned theoretical biophysical chemist and mathematical biologist, Dr. Schnell has received multiple awards in recognition of his research and teaching endeavors. He is Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Society for Mathematical Biology, and the Latin American Academy of Sciences. He is also a US National Academy of Medicine Emerging Leader in Health and Medicine. Dr. Schnell has remained funded by external and internal sources throughout his career. He is Editor-in-Chief of Mathematical Biosciences, and served as associate director of the Indiana University Biocomplexity Institute and President of the Society for Mathematical Biology.
