Kimberly A. Johnston, VMD, DACVS is licensed veterinarian and board certified veterinary surgeon who has been working in the biomedical research field since 2009 as well as being co-owner of equine specialty clinic in mid-Michigan. As a research scientist and the director of pre-clinical operations for Innovative BioTherapies Inc (IBT), a spin-out technology company from the University of Michigan, Dr. Johnston’s expertise and skills serve an integral role in development of animal models for pre-clinical studies for human directed extracorporeal therapies, including new and adaptive blood purification treatments, cell therapy devices and immunomodulatory devices, including the Selective Cytopheretic Device (SCD). Dr. Johnston has led IBTs animal study team to successful completion of numerous Phase I, Phase II and independent research projects funded through the NIH, US Department of Defense as well as private sponsorship. Experience includes models of sepsis, acute lung injury/ARDS, ischemia reperfusion injury, acute and chronic kidney failure, diabetes (type 1 and type 2) and intracerebral hemorrhage; all of which exhibit some component of immune system dysregulation. Dr. Johnston participates in on-going research at the University of Michigan to help advance technology associated with Selective Cytopheretic Device (SCD).
