My name is Helly Patel, and I am a current junior at the University of Michigan studying Neuroscience - minoring in Political Science and Women Studies. I transferred to Michigan last semester from Virginia Commonwealth University and while it has been an interesting transition, one of the driving factors behind my transfer was the plethora of research opportunities at Michigan as I am vastly interested in research and hope to pursue an MD/Ph.D.

Thus, when exploring different labs, when I came across the Weil Institute, I was extremely intrigued and I would love to assist in ongoing research projects. As an EMT, I have been exposed to a diverse range of patients and have been able to see the effects of critical injury firsthand. I believe it is important to develop technologies that assist in the care of the critically ill and especially those in special training programs. Being able to dive deeper into this field would be beneficial for me long term since I hope to pursue a career in Emergency Medicine. I have the opportunity to assist patients at the scene to the stretcher in the ED, however, I would also like to be that person behind those doors and finish the patient’s care and I believe this is the right start.
