Dr. Collins completed her bachelor’s degree in Engineering Science at Vanderbilt University and received her DVM from the University of Georgia. She completed residency and post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan in 2016 and is a Diplomat in the American College for Laboratory Animal Medicine, a recognized specialty by the American Veterinary Medical Association. During her research as a post-doctoral fellow, she focused on inflammation and immune dysregulation during sepsis in mice. Since her fellowship, her work has focused on infectious disease models including ABSL-3 containment studies and large animal surgical models (porcine shock, trauma, and hemorrhage, non-human primate xenotransplantation models, and biomedical device development in dogs, pigs, and sheep) at Baylor College of Medicine and then the University of Alabama at Birmingham Her knowledge of differences in pharmacokinetics of drugs, anatomy and physiology, and behavior between animals and humans is often vital to the success of a collaborative project working with medical doctors, research scientists, and regulatory entities. In addition to her clinical responsibilities and research pursuits, Dr. Collins is the ULAM ABSL-3 Program Director.
